Objective
Quantify and define value in current/future-state firm’s markets
Situation
A leading global management consultancy observed a divergence in the profitability of its core offerings over several years, and sought to validate the efficacy of several strategic planning scenarios — which could include targeted acquisition, divesture, and/or partner buy-out options — with detailed market due diligence. The impact on the brand of executing any scenario was of uppermost concern to executives, who wanted to explore the relative value of the business within each of the several envisioned strategies ahead of the possible transaction. Careful assessment and analysis of the current-state strategic position in each of its lines of business, as well as weighing the probability of success (assessing risks, competency maturity, competitive and regulatory issues) in each of the future-state scenarios under consideration, was required to gain the partnership’s buy-in and pursuit of any path forward.
Engagement
Over the course of two planning years we worked as a part of the client’s internal strategy team to identify, develop, frame, and advise on the key multi-dimensional market trends and metrics to be used across the business to decide the path forward. Deep insights consisting of tens of thousands of data points and hundreds of individual findings in global geographic markets, dozens of service markets and key industries were delivered and packaged in to the planning. In-depth, original competitive analyses across each dimension identified market leaders, share of market, key players and critical trends and client issues in each of dozens of individual markets.
Results
The findings in Pilgrim’s analysis were leveraged by the senior management team to choose among the strategic scenarios and reach the decision to pursue multiple transactions. The due diligence was further deployed in preparation of the vote by equity partners to act on management’s plan, as well as with investment stakeholders, underwriters, analysts, influencers and media to rationalize the transactions, which included divestiture of some firm businesses and a related initial public offering.
